Letterpress does this design justice … oh and did I mention 440# stock?
olollo is a custom furniture design studio that specializes in all aspects of the process from design to creation and installation. We were stoked about this certificate project they sent our way. The concept for the letterpress cards was something they could give to new homeowners/renters that was part art, part promotional. The finished piece was perfect and really highlights what you can accomplish with a 1-color design. Follow the break for more photos and info on production.
The certificates were double sided and designed by olollo, inc. We letterpress printed both sides on separate sheets of 220lb stock using a hand mixed pantone cool gray 9U ink. Below are some 3D photos that should help you get a better feel for how thick the cards are and what a nice impression we got on the paper.
With a design like these we always suggest printing on separate sheets and duplexing after printing. Because it was really important that these cards be set apart from any other printed piece, they were each printed on 220lb stock and then glued together. The final cards were equivalent to a 440lb stock, can you say quadruple-ply paper?
We printed these using photopolymer plates on a vandercook uni III. The coverage and size of the piece made a cylinder press the best choice for printing them.
Because of the ink coverage on either side of the print, we took full advantage of the ink fountain, a printer’s best friend! The pattern is a great mix of whimsical / fancy / modern and highlights the letterpress process.
In this photo you can really appreciate how thick the finished cards were. Regular 220lb. stock measures in at ~0.042″, so the 440lb. stock was ~ 0.084″ !
The back of the card is where the business-side comes in to play (the party is in full swing on the front). The design does a good job of balancing text and graphics with a cute image of a victorian couple at dinner adorned with a poodle, birdcage, and chandelier.
The finished piece was trimmed to 5.5″ x 8.5″ and is so cute we framed one and put in on the wall.
