Letterpress vs. Foil

We're asked about the difference between letterpress and foil stamping all the time. After we printed these cards for Wes Schulz of Dreams Collide we knew they were  perfect to illustrate the difference.

Foil Stamping (on the right) uses a metal plate  with heat to imprint foil onto paper.  Foil comes in a variety of shades including golds and silvers as well as a blues, greens, reds and lots of colors in between. We also have pigment (without the shine) and specialty foils like holographic and scratch off.

Letterpress (on the left) uses a plastic plate along with ink to create a debossed effect. There are more choices when it comes to ink color and if a pantone color doesn't exist, we mix it from scratch. Ink colors also include metallics (e.g. gold, bronze, copper, silver, etc.) and fluorescents.

Wedding Wednesday: Hampton Bays

This week we're thrilled to debut our Hampton Bays invitation suite - the newest addition to our wedding collection.

The trifold invite includes the events on the middle panel, and the accommodations and rsvp (tear-off) on the last panel. The Hampton Bays program is a 6-page fan with gold grommets - flat printing makes them an affordable option for wedding programs.

Check out more photos of the suite here:

The suite also includes two-sided coasters, hip sunglasses escort cards, a custom letterpress map, and more.

The thank you card that's part of the suite is now available in our shop:

Dia De Los Muertos Laser Cut Card

Halloween is fast approaching and today is the perfect day to share our brand new greeting cards.

We were inspired by the Day of the Dead and designed an ornate skull that was screaming to be laser cut.

The card, which is now available online (Halloween Skull), was laser cut out of black Neenah Astrobrights 65# cover stock.

We glued in a white sheet for each card to show off the laser cut design and make writing a spooky note easier.

Happy Halloween!

Back to Business: Color Concept Theory

In our latest installment of the Back to Business series, we're sharing a four-color letterpress business card for Color Concept Theory.

The cards had a pretty mix of 3 custom PMS colors + a blind deboss on the front and the same 3 spot colors on the back - we had a fun time mixing all of them!

We repurposed elements that were part of the original logotype and made the custom pattern for the front of the cards. The pattern adds a nice texture to the cards when printed.

Here are the specs:
Size - 3.5" x 2"
Stock - 600gsm Duplexed Lettra
Printing - Letterpress - 4 colors
Press - Heidelberg Windmill
Design - Logo supplied by client

We created a short stop-motion film of the cards so you can see every word on the front of the business card and howthe pattern changes based on how you hold it.

Here are the specs:
Size - 3.5" x 2"

What’s Up This Week / 8

The cat's out of the bag, the new press we teased about on instagram (and on last weeks What's Up post) is finally here. A lot of people guessed right, it's a Heidelberg KS Cylinder.

The press came out of a small shop and was still being used by the original owner for printing.

So why a cylinder press? We're no strangers to cylinder presses, we love our Vandercook Universal III's! While the Heidelberg Windmill is the workhorse of the letterpress world, the KS (and the entire line of Heidelberg Cylinders) packs a big punch - literally.

A cylinder press prints one line of the form at a time while a platen press prints the entire form with a single impression. Top that off with 4 form rollers and you've got a the equivalent of a letterpress genie!

To keep busy while we're prepping for the inaugural print run, check out these Heidelberg manuals:

Wedding Wednesday: Bohemia Wedding Suite

Time for the second installment of our Wedding Wednesday series! Today we're featuring the Bohemia wedding suite which was inspired Par Avion with a modern twist.

We're in love with the program which we designed as a customized passport that was flat printed on cover stock - perfect for a destination wedding!

The Airplane thank you cards for the suite are also available in our shop as single cards and six packs.

We continued the Air Mail / Airplane theme and designed a boarding pass save the date which you can customize with your destination's airline and flight information.

What’s Up This Week / 7

This week came and went fast, everyone in the studio was busy working on new projects including new designs for 2014!

If you didn't know by now, we love teal so when a customer asks us to edge invites in a spot PMS teal we get all giddy inside.

In case you missed it on twitter, we shared some new fonts (Athletico), our favorite of the moment is Carlino - a multilayered font by Pío Pío.

We've got an exciting announcement about some new equipment coming our way. We posted the news to instagram and asked people to guess, were they right?

We asked people on twitter if they thought an App could ever replace pen & paper, we don't - I love my notebook!

Let's end with this quote from Maya Angelou and get creative. "The important thing is to use it. You can’t use up creativity. The more you use it, the more you have."

Deboss vs. Emboss

We wanted to showcase this set of cards we printed recently to demonstrate the difference between embossing and debossing. The artwork for both were identical, the only difference was how they were printed.

Embossing (top) is when the image is raised on the paper - think certificate or diploma. This is done with a die + counter and is done without ink or registered to foil. We use metal plates which are slightly more expensive but hold finer detail.

Debossing (bottom) is the effect that occurs with deep impression letterpress. The image or design is pressed into the paper and can be done with or without ink (blind). We print letterpress designs with photopolymer plates.

The details: Stock was 220# Lettra, designed by Danah Nassief Design, blind printed (no ink), edge colored in purple, and a custom purple envelope.

Check out all of the photos in the full post including some instagrams of embossing with a registered foil.

Stella Artois Note Cards

Today we're featuring a custom note card set we recently produced for Stella Artois. The notecards were letterpress printed in 3 colors with insanely-tight register to match the high end styling of the Stella brand.

To add some extra refinement to the finished pieces, we edge colored them in a metallic gold to match. Some other details: the cards were printed on 220# lettra, ink was vegetable-oil based, and the final size was A2 (4.25" x 5.5").

UPDATE: The cards were featured on the newly launched The Beauty of Letterpress blog by Neenah Paper (link).

Sweet Foil Notebooks

We love everything sweet and these custom notebooks we recently produced will definitely give you a cavity. Letterpress printed on GF Smith Colorplan in a brand new color, Pistachio.

The covers were letterpress printed with our icon pattern as a blind press and then foil stamped in metallic silver. Each of the inside pages is foil stamped in a different metallic colors for each of our sweet icons (think sundaes, cannoli, cakes, cupcakes).

Each book was saddle stitched (a fancy term for stapled) with 20 sheets of paper and trimmed to 5.5" x 3.75".

National Stationery Show 2013 Debut

What's up! We've been so swamped since the wrap up of the National Stationery Show (booth #2142) that this is the first time anyone has had time to post about it.

The show was amazing! We met so many people new and old, it was really nice to put faces to all of the people we've been dealing with for so many years. Thank you for your continued support, we can't wait to share all of the new things with you.

But we weren't at the show just to mingle, we launched our new greeting card line, our first wedding album, tons of new thank you cards, hang tags, wine tags, and posters. All of this will be coming to our shop in the next few weeks, some of it has already popped up there (dolcepress.com/shop) so check it out.

Stay tuned for special posts on our swag from the show, booth setup, and more details on all of the new paper goods!

Titanic Remembrance Day

April's TypeCard is here! We worked with Christian Pimentel, a Dominican Republic based graphic designer and artist to create a Titanic Remembrance Day card. The card was hand lettered by Christian with the words, "I Will Never Let Go".

We opted for a folded card this month, the finished piece was 4Bar, the perfect size for a little note! For the ink we hand mixed an arctic blue ice ink and added a touch of silver. As always these cards ship free with every order in the month of April so keep a lookout for them.

Titanic Remembrance Day is April 15th, and this year marks the 101st year since the fatal collision. Check out more information on the RMS Titanic here.

You can download a photo of the card to use as a background here.

Thick isn’t just for letterpress

Happy Friday! We recently printed business cards for The Happy Cloud designed by Cainkade and thought they were perfect to share on the blog. Why? A lot of people think that the only way to get nice thick business cards is to go letterpress.

For these cards, they wanted a smooth satin finish and that's something digital printing is perfect for. To give the cards extra weight, we duplexed two sheets of Neenah classic crest together to get a 600gsm business card.

Solid + Register + Knockout

We wanted to share these business cards we printed for Franck Sikorski because they're a great example of solid coverage and tight registration.

The red and gray overprint each other and the knockout in both the red and gray creates a faux-emboss effect (the white part of the print appears embossed instead of debossed).

Designing for letterpress with knockouts can create a unique effect, if you have questions on what works or doesn't post it in the comments or send us your design.

Customizing Invitations

One of our biggest questions with Brides that visit our shop is: "What can we customize on an invitation?"

Our answer always is anything! We wanted to share these two unique invites which are variations on our Hydrangea wedding suite. We changed almost everything from the ink colors and paper stock, to the florals, and typefaces.

The first invite for Bonnie and Aish used a palm tree for their destination wedding and on the second one we created a three-color sunflower design. The floral choices don't end there, with thousands of different flowers which one is your favorite?

Apple Green Edge Coloring

Today we're sharing business cards we printed for Mac Reviewcast, an Apple podcast that reviews hardware, software, and websites. The cards demonstrate the pop that edge coloring can add to any business card.

The cards were printed on Arturo, a fine european made paper perfect for letterpress. The stock takes a beautiful impression and its thick edges are perfect edge coloring.  The 3D Mac Reviewcast logo is captured quite nicely in 2 colors and the impression lends dimension to the look.

To see more photos of the cards, check out our portfolio: Mac Reviewcast.

Digital Wedding Invites

When it comes to invitations, more options are always better. We recently finished these invitations for Leslie & Sean (designed by Design23) which were flat printed, an affordable way to print invitations without sacrificing quality.

The suite consisted of an invite, reply, and accommodations card. Since flat printing is a digital process you can print as many colors as you want, unlike letterpress which is typically limited to 3 colors.

The entire suite was backed in blue paper which gives them a custom look. For more information on flat printing and pricing, contact us.

Happy Sweet 16

Just added to our work portfolio, a custom invitation we designed for Erin's sweet 16. The invite was a great mix of fun and sophistication with a classic layout that we tuned up with elements of purple.

We added a custom liner to match the invite with the same bowtie theme.
