How do you create a unique business card?

To create a unique business card, think beyond standard designs and incorporate elements that stand out. For example, using a blind pattern adds texture and depth, while edge coloring in bold shades like neon orange enhances the impact. A diecut design can reveal different layers, creating a 3D effect. Opt for techniques like letterpress printing, which creates a unique tactile finish. This was taken to another level with the blind debossed pattern on the back of these cards for SkySync. Experimenting with custom finishes ensures your card is memorable and elevates your brand’s identity.

How did you make these cards?

These cards pack a serious punch. There were a lot of different techniques we mixed to achieve the finished look. For me, what stands out the most is the textured effect of the blind deboss. The printing created a pattern on the card that radiates from the logo in the top left corner. Here’s a breakdown of how we did it:

  • Blind Letterpress – First, we letterpress printed the blind pattern on the stock.
  • 3 Color Letterpress – Next we printed the 3 other letterpress colors (light blue, medium blue, gray).
  • Digital Printing – The middle layer was flat printed with the medium blue swatch of the logo.
  • Die-cutting – We diecut the small square on the front of the card so the middle layer would be visible.
  • Duplexing – The individual sheets were glued together to create a 3ply (triplexed) business card.
  • Trimming – We cut down the cards to the final size.
  • Edge Coloring – We painted the edge of the cards in a neon orange so that it pops on all sides of the card.

Shells for Large Business Card Orders

People always ask us for the best way to achieve the look without breaking the bank. Custom business cards can be more expensive especially when you mix in a bunch of different printing and finishing.

For SkySync, we create shells for the cards so that all of the common elements are printed in one run for the different orders they place in a year. Shells help to offset the investment in dies and press time but running a bigger order up front. Then when a new hire needs business cards, we can imprint them. This saves on the overall cost and also speeds up production since most of the printing and finishing is done.

For these cards, the only downside is that we still had to letterpress the contact info on the back and edge color each lot separately. But, even with that drawback, the shell printing helped bring the project within budget for the client.
